Our earring posts are made of surgical steel or brass. Our brass posts are EU compliant which means they have little to no traces of nickel in them.
The state of California recently updated the lead content limits drastically from 60,000 parts per million (ppm) to 500 parts per million (ppm). As a result, SOKO’s recycled brass products are no longer compliant. The products labeled with the warning message means that the item you are viewing may contain lead above 500 ppm.
California maintains the most stringent U.S. laws regarding lead content in adult jewelry, and their guidelines are good to follow for anyone concerned about jewelry safety, wherever you live.
Our recycled brass has trace amounts of lead because lead can be used in metal mixtures to allow it to melt together at a lower temperature. In the past, our jewelry was created with recycled brass but moving forward we will sources brass from a vendor that meets the new lead content limit requirements.
Small jewelry components containing lead are generally considered safe for adults to handle and wear externally. Nevertheless, as safety and environmental standards continue to rise, we intend to reduce and eliminate lead in our products.
